Project: Mississippi: The Place I Live

Description: The photographs in Betty Press’s series Mississippi: The Place I Live  showcase the work she’s made in the Southern state. Her images capture, with sensitivity and gravity, the beauty, history, and humanity of the region.

Betty Press is best known for her photographs taken in Africa, where she lived and worked as a freelance photojournalist from 1987 to 1995. Now living in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and teaching at the University of Southern Mississippi, she continues to photograph in Africa as well as in the South, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and Cuba. Her photographs have been published in most major magazines and newspapers.

Jeff Rich is a photographer based in Iowa City. His work focuses on water issues ranging from recreation and sustainability to exploitation and abuse. Jeff currently teaches photography at the University of Iowa. He curates the OA’s weekly photo series, Eyes on the South.
