What Remains

Artist: Gesche Würfel

Project: SE Raleigh

Description: These images, taken during an artist’s residency in 2015, reveal the gentrification of SE Raleigh, an historically African-American neighborhood first settled over 130 years ago by rural North Carolinians who sought closer proximity to the city. Recent increases in rent and property taxes have forced many to move out of their homes. Gesche Würfel documents the disappearance of a neighborhood that once thrived as a hub of “African-American business, education, and cultural life.”
