Julian Rankin

Julian Rankin is the author of Catfish Dream: Ed Scott’s Fight for his Family Farm and Racial Justice in the Mississippi Delta, a James Beard Foundation Book Award nominee, and the recipient of the 2019 nonfiction award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. He is the director of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

Paddling to Walter Inglis Anderson’s Horn Island—a feature essay from the Fall 2019 issue.

As we paddled, my awareness inverted, a shift in perspective that would continue for the entire journey. Though we were headed south, the world was tilted, and as on Anderson’s map, Horn Island was the North Star.
