Erected in 1974 by the art collective known as Ant Farm, the “Stonehenge of the Panhandle” has become one of the most beloved attractions along Route 66. Part of the Ranch’s appeal comes from its conspicuous absence of velvet ropes, viewing hours, and annoying wall texts. Anyone can hang out at the Ranch day or night, and anyone can decorate the cars with little artistic flourishes of her own.

ESSAY: Dave Hickey

Dave Hickey had a hell of a month. He announced his retirement from the art world to The Observer: “What can I tell you?” he said. “It’s nasty and it’s stupid. I’m an intellectual and I don’t care if I’m not invited to the party. I quit.” Then he quit his job at the University of New Mexico. He said he wanted to invent an algorithm that would spare writing teachers from having to read, “quires of crap.” Then his landlord smelled cigarette smoke and evicted him. And then he was gobbling steak at a restaurant when a piece of gristle lodged in his throat.

So we enlisted a range of Southern experts (gallery owners, curators, critics, artists) to help us find them. We couldn't fit all one hundred amazing artists in the issue, so here are the rest of the results, artists 41-100 (plus our amazing cover photographer coming in at 40.5).
