INTERNSHIPS

If you are enthusiastic about learning how to become a magazine editor, please consider applying for an internship at The Oxford American.

No previous experience necessary. We offer year-round programs that can accommodate most schedules. (The minimum internship lasts three months in the summer and five to six months during the rest of the year.) The job is full time and non-paying.

The Oxford American internship program provides some flexibility for internship starting dates, but most applicants prefer to start their internship periods in January, mid-May, or mid-August. We encourage potential interns to submit their applications according to the following deadlines:

  • March 15 (for internships starting around mid-May)
  • June 15 (for internships starting around mid-August)
  • November 1 (for internships starting in January)

Interns at The Oxford American are thoroughly trained and given many responsibilities. On leaving OA headquarters our interns are ready to conquer the world.

Send applications to:

Letter from Marc Smirnoff, Editor of The Oxford American:

Thank you for expressing interest in The Oxford American's internship program.

The Oxford American is a general-interest magazine from and about the South. We are based in Conway, Arkansas, and just a jaunt away from the beautiful Ozark mountains.

The Oxford American's internship program provides a hands-on learning experience. Interns take part in all aspects of magazine production and editing.

The duties of an intern may include line-editing, fact checking, researching, proofreading (before we go to press, each page of the magazine is read innumerable times by staffers), answering phones, generating article ideas, monitoring the progress of certain projects, helping with the day-to-day business operations, assisting with advertising or circulation or publicity campaigns, participating in the planning of issues, fulfilling subscription or back-issue orders, putting in corrections, evaluating manuscript submissions, learning how to operate Quark (the software program most publishers use), and much more. Few internship programs offer opportunities as extensive as The OA's.

Previous experience is not a prerequisite. We simply want to attract people who are dependable, motivated, thoughtful, detail-oriented, and passionate about journalism, literature, and magazines. An enthusiastic intern working at his or her top capability is, even in the relatively short term of an Oxford American internship, able to make truly meaningful contributions to the magazine.

We are confident that interns will leave the program with a fresh and useful understanding of magazine editing and production and, provided they are up to the challenges of doing first-rate work, they will also leave with an important addition to their résumés.

In applying for an internship, please send us a letter outlining what you hope to gain from the experience and what you think you could bring to the magazine. Please also mail us: a résumé (if you haven't already done so), writing clips (if possible), and the time period (and the hours) you would like to be here (we do recommend that to learn all that you can, you apply for a full-time, six-month term).

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

Marc Smirnoff
