East Dallas artist Sergio Garcia is getting international acclaim for his delirious tricycle sculptures (the Cannes Film Festival snagged a couple of them this year—as party props, I guess) and it may be surprising to learn that he started out as a graffiti artist. He's currently part of a three-man "counter-cultural" show, N.R.G., at HCG Gallery in Dallas. Garcia is already barreling into the mainstream: The set designers of Gossip Girl have leased one of his text paintings. To me, Garcia merges the technical refinement of high art with the exuberance and humor of street art (with imaginative splashes of Willy Wonka and Freud). His show at 941 Geary just closed. Serotonin-boosting art!
