Emerging Southern Photographer
Aaron Canipe—Hickory, North Carolina
Catawba County, North Carolina, is the subject matter of Aaron Canipe’s series When You Get Back. The work has the feeling of late summer, a time when we would return to our hometowns as children and teenagers for summer vacation and find the same characters awaiting us, as though nothing had changed. Events were unfolding exactly as they as always have, even though we were not there to witness them.
Aaron’s images document the landscape and characters of his childhood with the changed perception of an adult. His intimate photographs show us the textures and moments that seem to us, as children, just part of daily life. But as adults these moments seem to gain importance and their meanings begin to shift.
Aaron Canipe was born and raised in Hickory, North Carolina. He recently received his BFA in fine art photography from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. His work has been shown in exhibitions throughout the South and D.C. Aaron also helps operate Empty Stretch, a platform that promotes up-and-coming artists and publishes short-run photography zines and books. Currently, Aaron is devoting time to a project about his home in North Carolina. More work can be seen at his website.
