EYES ON THE SOUTH: Lizzie Cuthbertson
Emerging Southern Photographer
Lizzie Cuthbertson—Lexington, South Carolina
In the project Leaving Home, we are taken to Lizzie Cuthbertson’s childhood home, which now lies uninhabited: a house empty of appliances, televisions, computers, and telephones—of clothes, dishes, plants, pets, and car keys. All that remains are a few pieces of furniture and a pink carpet, which through color and texture records the former layout of a bedroom. Even the land around the home seems to be empty, the relics of a childhood being enveloped by the woods.

Lizzie Cuthbertson recently moved to Philadelphia after living in South Carolina for most of her life. The idea of home, the effect people have on the places they live, and her own emotional relationship to homes of the past shape her photography and push her to continue making work.
